Tips For Using Contact Cement In DIY Project

Updated: Oct 30, 2020

The Contact cement spray is an excellent adhesive for bonding many different types of materials, such as wood, glass, metal, leather, and plastic. However, contact cement dries quickly, there is no turning back, so it is important that you know some tricks and tips that can make your next contact cement project more successful and less frustrating.

Completely mixed

Contact cement is made up of several different elements - some solids, others liquids. Solid materials tend to be heavier, and settle to the bottom of the container. Therefore, use a paint mixer to mix the materials and disperse any heavy material that is at the bottom of the container.

Drying

Contact cement spray is different from other types of adhesive products. As a comparison, when you spread the rubber cement on two surfaces to be bonded, then the two should be bonded immediately. With contact cement you place it on both surfaces that you want to glue, then let it dry until it is slightly sticky to the touch. If you join the two surfaces together before the contact cement dries, the bonding may fail.

Cleaning

Any dust, grease or other debris on your work surfaces can compromise bonding. Make sure that both surfaces are clean. Use a flannel to remove any dust or small particles of dirt. Acetone is effective in removing fat.

Uniform coating

Be sure to evenly coat the entire work surfaces to be bonded with contact cement. Use a brush to cover the entire surface with glue, and then use a rubber cylinder to ensure that the cement is evenly distributed.

Knowing what Contact cement spray is for is extremely important for anyone working in the furniture or construction industry, as the advantages of using the product are numerous: savings in time and money, easy application and transport, and reduction of losses.
