How to Finish Plywood Edges Using Veneer Edge Banding

Veneer edge banding is a thin strip of real wood veneer that is used to cover the exposed edges of plywood, MDF, or other types of engineered wood products. The veneer edge banding is typically made from the same species of wood as the plywood or panel it is being applied to, creating a seamless and natural look.

Veneer edge banding comes in a variety of widths, ranging from 1/2 inch to 2 inches, and thicknesses, typically ranging from 0.5mm to 2mm. The most common width for veneer edge banding is 13/16 inch (21mm), which is suitable for most applications.

Eight general process for finishing plywood edges using veneer edge banding:

Choose the right edge banding

Select a wood veneer edge banding that matches the species and grain pattern of the plywood you are using.

Cut the edge banding

Cut the edge banding to the length of the plywood edge, allowing for a small overhang on each end.

Apply adhesive

Apply a thin, even layer of adhesive to the edge of the plywood using a brush or roller. Be sure to cover the entire edge and apply the adhesive evenly.

Apply the edge banding

Carefully align the edge banding with the edge of the plywood and press it firmly into place. Use a roller or block to apply pressure and ensure good adhesion.

Trim the edge banding

Once the adhesive has dried, trim the excess edge banding using a sharp utility knife or trimmer. Be sure to cut the edge banding flush with the edge of the plywood.

Sand the edge

Sand the edge of the plywood and edge banding using fine-grit sandpaper. Start with a coarse grit and work your way up to a finer grit to achieve a smooth finish.

Apply finish

Apply a finish to the edge of the plywood and edge banding to match the rest of the project. This can include staining, varnishing, or painting.

Sand and finish again (optional)

After the finish has dried, sand the edge lightly again using a fine-grit sandpaper. Apply a second coat of finish if desired.

Note: The specific steps and materials used may vary depending on the type of edge banding and adhesive used. Always refer to the manufacturer's instructions for best results.
