Varieties of Furniture Edges and Their Characteristics

The main task of the furniture edge is the facing of the end surfaces of the chipboard, but it also serves as a design element in the finished cabinet furniture. In fact, there are quite a few types of edges, which differ in method of fastening and price, as well as each has its own advantages. Let's take a closer look at all these points.

· Melamine

The melamine edge banding is a paper-based furniture edge impregnated with melamine resins. They protect the base from external influences. Today it is the cheapest and most affordable, therefore it is very often used in furniture production, but to be honest, the quality of such furniture leaves much to be desired.

· 3D Edging: 3D Acrylic Edging (PMMA-3D)

This edge consisting of two main layers, the lower one with a decorative finish or pattern, and the upper one made of transparent plastic. By using transparent plastic as the top layer, the effect of a three-dimensional image can be observed, which is why it is called a 3D edge.

There is always a protective film on top of the edge, which you remove after trimming. At first you paste over the 3D edge of the chipboard, cut it off, and only then remove the protective layer. It is better if you remove it after installing the furniture, so as not to damage the glossy surface.

· Post forming and soft forming

These are very high-quality methods for edging chipboard ends which are made on special machines. They are mainly used for cladding the end surfaces of kitchen countertops and facades, as well as window sills and bathroom furniture, since it is in this way that the plate can be completely sealed.

In fact, post forming and soft forming is a method of applying laminate to pre-milled chipboard ends and this technology is the application of a durable polymer material to the end of the part.
