Wood veneers: types and usage in your household furniture

The term veneer means a very thin coating over any solid material to achieve an attractive and beautiful looking surface. So evidently veneer sheets means those thin layer of sheets made up of wood to cover an inner panel to give furniture a great look. Veneer sheets are 1/8th inches in thickness.

Types of veneers

As far as a quality woodwork is concerned, hardwood veneers are the commonly used material to create exotic furniture. The hardwood veneer is nothing but a thin slice of hardwood that is glued to a piece of plywood, or particle board which is comparatively budget friendly is called the substrate. But the end result is that a substrate should also look like an expensive type of wood. Therefore, the ultimate aim of using a wood veneer sheets is to bring out a high-end amazingly designed wood item look at. It takes a cheaper labor cost along with a low cost material.

The common types of wood veneer include:

· Raw wood veneer


This refers to veneer sheets made using different species of wood like from the Oak, Birch, Teak, Rosewood, Mahogany, Cedar, Ash, Cherry, Maple and the Eucalyptus etc. Different types of veneer woods are being made from these different species of trees. The raw wood veneer is very attractive owing to the natural wood grain patterns which are being emphasized while processing the wood.

· Backed Veneers


These are veneers that are processed with additional material that serve this wood with strength and flexibility to the veneer. This is an expensive wood veneer.

· Rotary-cut veneer


This is a budget friendly variety of wood veneer that is obtained by spinning a log on a lathe. The cutter slices the log into thin sheets as the lathe turns.

· Shop- sawn veneer

This refers to wood veneers that are being produced by the woodworkers manually. This veneer would usually be thicker than the other veneers.

· Laminate veneer

This refers to types of veneer sheets material that is evolved by pressing together fine layers of wood.

6. Veneer core plywood

It is slightly different from types of common veneers those are used and is used mainly for panel construction.
